Body Transformation with LeanFit Mobile App

At the Apple Developer Academy, we were challenged with creating a final project focused on specific areas, and our team chose health as our core theme. This led to the development of LeanFit, a fitness app designed to help users achieve a lean body through fat-burning, with a particular focus on the abdominal area. Built for iOS and watchOS, LeanFit optimizes workout routines through its 'Active Zone' feature and provides personalized daily calorie recommendations to promote balanced nutrient intake.

Problem

Our team recognized that excess body fat can lead to significant health risks, affecting individuals, particularly those with busy schedules, such as 9-to-5 workers, who have limited time for exercise. As a result, fat-burning efforts are often not optimal. While methods like calorie deficit, intermittent fasting, and exercise are commonly used, they often lack proper guidance, leading to less effective outcomes. This led us to create an app that helps users burn fat more effectively and achieve a lean body, with a focus on abdominal area.

Process

Research & Analysis: We conducted user interviews to understand pain points and needs, and expert interviews to gather insights on effectively burn excess body fat. Additionally, we reviewed relevant scientific studies on body fat, exercise, and nutrition, while studying competitor and industry trends to identify opportunities for innovation and differentiate our apps from others.

Key Findings: Our research revealed key factors affecting fat-burning and fitness outcomes, highlighting user challenges and effective strategies for better results.

Interview

  • Most interviewee want to achieve a leaner body and ideal weight but struggle with exercise and dieting due to limited time.

  • Managing diet and calorie intake is challenging, often leading to improper diet choices.

  • Some of interviewee are unaware of their body fat percentage and feel the process lacks noticeable effectiveness.

Research

  • Exercising within the "active zone" is highly effective for fat-burning.

  • Body fat percentage can be estimated using data such as height, weight, and other relevant factors.

  • Calorie intake and proper macronutrient distribution play a key role in maintaining a calorie deficit.

Solution Concept: Based on the key findings, we developed a clear solution concept of a fitness app designed to help people to achieve a lean body by maximizing fat burning through effective workouts and personalized dietary guidance. This concept addresses specific challenges identified in the interviews, such as limited time and suboptimal results.

Information Architecture: Based on the research findings, we restructured the app's navigation and content, prioritizing features and information according to user needs.

Wireframing & Prototyping: We began by creating wireframes to visualize the basic layout and functionality of each screen. These wireframes were iteratively refined based on internal feedback and user testing. We then developed a high-fidelity, interactive prototype to simulate the user experience and test the design in a more realistic setting. This allowed us to identify and address any usability issues before moving into visual design.

A/B Testing: To validate our design for the watchOS version, we conducted A/B tests to identify the most intuitive and appealing UI. By comparing key screen variations and measuring user engagement, task completion, and satisfaction, we refined the design for a better user experience.

Based on A/B testing, we focused on refining Option 2, which users preferred over Option 1. To improve clarity and user experience, we made several adjustments, including changed color of the 'Maximum Zone' and changed the white arrow to a highlighting effect. These changes provide a clearer visual indication of the current heart rate zone.

Visual Design & Style Guide: We developed a cohesive visual language, including color schemes, typography, and iconography, ensuring consistency throughout the app. We also created a style guide to maintain design consistency in future updates.

Conclusion

This project challenged me to blend research, wireframing, and intuitive UI design into a solution for busy individuals seeking a leaner body. While some features still need improvement, it was a meaningful opportunity to sharpen my problem-solving and UI/UX design skills, focusing on creating impactful experiences.
